We caught up with first year BA (Hons) Fashion student, Taroneh Dorodi, on why she chose Leeds Arts University, what she is currently working on and her plans for the future…

Why did you choose Leeds as a city and more specifically, Leeds Arts University?

I chose the city of Leeds because of its diverse culture and the range of universities. Leeds is a really friendly city with a great atmosphere, and in my opinion, the best student social life in the country. Leeds Arts University has a really warm and friendly atmosphere and it has one of the best art faculties in the country, which were the main reasons why I decided to study here. The University building has a wide range of spacious departments devoted to the arts which give students an insight into all aspects of creating.

What made you select BA (Hons) Fashion?

I chose Fashion because I have always been creative and a passion for pattern cutting. I love the idea of making my own garments and experimenting with different type of materials. Studying Fashion enables me to follow my passion and hopefully fulfil my dream of one day becoming a successful fashion designer.

What do you specialise in? What exciting things are you working on at the moment?

I specialise in moulage, pattern cutting and fashion illustration which entails creating a design, cutting the pattern and draping on the stand. This technique enables you to mock up different ideas on a mannequin. For one of my current modules, I am working on a shirt project where we have to provide a six line up collection.

How does the University develop your practice?

The University staff are very professional and encouraging. They encourage us to sign up for different events and competitions in order to gain more experience outside of the University. Throughout my first year at Leeds Arts University, they have given me so much confidence and encouragement which has continuously really helped me progress on my fashion design course.

What do you plan to do after university?

After graduating from Leeds Art University, I would like to gain some work experience by applying to some fashion companies for an internship in the fashion industry. I would also like to take the opportunity to travel to different countries and experience different fashion cultures and languages. This will enable me to gain more fashion knowledge and hopefully work in fashion design. My aim is to eventually work independently and start my own business.
