The Course
Graphic Design offers a practice-based, dynamic and idea-oriented experience that enables students to develop a unique design practice and portfolio.
Through workshops, briefs, and collaborative projects, students develop a specialist skillset that engages a range of graphic design disciplines utilising both new and traditional technologies and processes.
Graphic design students develop design and communication projects such as publication design, traditional letterpress and screen printed posters, UI and UX design, experimental and AI enabled design, motion design, print for fabric and clothing, and exhibition design. Experimentation, play and creativity are at the heart of the curriculum on this course. Hands-on experiences with materials, technology and processes help students build confidence and adaptability across the extensive range of creative applications available to graphic designers. Real world scenarios and live briefs are embedded within each year of study, providing students with opportunities to engage with industry professionals and produce work that exists in the world.

What You’ll Study
During your first year on the course you will engage with creative briefs and projects that will help you to adjust to higher education and university life. You will learn to engage with design and communication problems in a playful, experimental and creative way by exploring a range of media, techniques and processes. Engaging with fundamental graphic design skills you will develop an appreciation of the range of disciplines and applications of graphic design.
Course Facilities
BA (Hons) Graphic Design students are based in a large, purpose-built shared studio. Students will have access to a wide range of resources with a drop-in facility so work can be undertaken, provided resource inductions have been completed.
For Graphic Design students this will include print resources which provide excellent facilities for bookmaking and paper-based printmaking using a range of processes; access to industry standard laser cutters; professional-standard, large-format digital printing and print finishing and a vinyl cutter enabling designs to be cut from many types of vinyl.
Computer suites house networks of Apple Mac computers featuring regularly updated, industry-standard software for a wide range of creative applications that support all our courses and a purpose-built specialist library which includes including special collections of artists’ books, photobooks and illustrated books as well as the University archive. Self service facilities are available throughout, supported by a dedicated and experienced team of library staff.

Study Abroad
Studying abroad can help Leeds Arts University students gain valuable experience, broaden their horizons, develop international networks and experience their practice from a different perspective. Leeds Arts University has a global network of international partner universities in 15 different countries. Students can apply for a semester abroad in their second year of study.

Students have won numerous awards including: D&AD New Blood Award, International Society of Typographic Designers, Penguin Book Awards, YCN Student Awards, RSA Student Design Awards and Starpak Students Awards. Your Future
We support our students in highlighting and taking-up opportunities that align with their interests and ambitions. Graduates have taken up roles in a range of different areas such as junior designer positions within creative agencies, designers in publishing, UI and UX design roles, in-house designer roles, marketing and advertising creative roles, and roles in social media content creation and management. Some graduates choose to continue in education by enrolling on postgraduate courses such as our own MA in Graphic Design.
Creative thinking is at the core of all our courses and the ability to develop creative solutions in a variety of professional contexts is in demand across a range of careers. Our courses embed research, communication, writing and presentation skills. Along with an ability to collaborate with others and a high level of cultural awareness, our graduates are also able to create possibilities for career progression in the wider creative economy as part of other industries.
