A brick from the old wall, a brick from the new wall, a brick from the house and some broken one from the garden. Al av just a splash in mi tea! Leave tea bag in. Dire Straits, Brothers in Arms is on; Gran asks, “do you want a rich tea”. 

What do you think of when you imagine the coast?

For me the answer to this question is examined in this visually striking project Horizons as I explore an emotional connection to the coast through my photographic practice. Horizons is a reflective and emotive response to the coastline focusing on the tranquility found at the edges of Britain and highlights the unique qualities that form this diverse landscape. Each image within the project features identical composition to one another and by excluding specific objects and focusing on the simplicity of multiple horizons, the body of work effectively communicates the vibrant relationship and the poetic light found in both the sea and the sky.

Throughout the project, my perspective of the coast is one as a place of peaceful relaxation and each image documents a unique exploration of the changing light both above and below the horizon line. Horizons reflects my personal exploration for locations that soothe anxieties, and through the focused serenity depicted in each of the images it highlights the unique meditative qualities of the British coastline and how it can provide us all with a space for reflection.

My work is a visual autobiography. Meant to be narrative, and with a nostalgic and hazy feeling, I use my photographs to tell stories and recount memories. Usually contrived images, my work explores my own relationship with growing up and navigating specifically themes of Americana and femininity.

I like to play with the truth, and create work that is just surreal enough to potentially disturb, but is rooted in reality. Instead of eschewing creating images that wouldn’t be out of place circulating creditlessly on tumblr blogs, I embrace a certain ‘cheapness’, using the built-in flash of an iPhone camera and embracing the grainy, amateur look that photos taken that way possess.
