Sally is currently a senior lecturer on the BA (Hons) Photography course. She has taught and led on a variety of courses at other institutions, and has delivered on HE Photography courses for over 10 years. She is involved in delivering both theory and practice-based modules, and specialises in working in the Photography studio. She has worked extensively on professional modules over the last 10 years, and is passionate about creating real-world external-facing opportunities for students, encouraging them to engage in live briefs, competitions and collaborative opportunities.
Sally continues to work as a professional photographer, specialising in people and food photography. Her commercial studio work has been published in magazines such as Asiana, and she has three times been shortlisted for the prestigious Food Photographer of the Year award, receiving commended and highly commended awards for her work, which was selected for the finalists’ exhibition at the Mall Galleries, London.
Her research and practice focus on food photography as central to contemporary culture, and explores the link between food, identity and representation, and the construction of authenticity and myth. She is currently interested in the notion that food photography in popular culture conjures shared social fantasies and perpetuate idealised accounts of domestic life, and is engaged in a collaborative project exploring the meaning attached to everyday domestic objects and their relationship to food in visual culture.
Sally achieved her BA in Contemporary Photographic Practice from the University of Northumbria at Newcastle some years ago. More recently she achieved a distinction in her MA in Photography from University of Teesside (2015). She is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
