MA Photography

MA Photography graduate, Francesca Marengo, has been selected as one of the winners of the Urbanautica Institute Award 2024 for their project 'Consonant time' in the People and Communities category.

Urbanautica is an independent publisher working on photography, visual anthropology and literacy. It is recognised for its critical and reflective approach to photography, emphasising the medium's power to document, interpret, and question the world around us. The Urbanautica Annual Awards hold significant value in recognising and celebrating the profound role of photography in shaping our perception of the world. They promote a deeper and more thoughtful engagement with the evolving role of images in our society.

‘Consonant time’ is an ongoing project that Francesca started working on during their MA Photography degree in 2022. Since graduating, Francesca has moved to London and continued to develop the work winning the Urbanautica Institute Award 2024 last month in March 2025.

"Consonant time begins with the desire to meet the Other. It departs from a place of necessity of being heard, seen; to see myself in relation to you. To discover myself thanks to the differences between us. Since moving to London I found myself looking for a way to face the loneliness of being in a metropolis where creating meaningful relationships is becoming increasingly difficult. Within this context, I began relying on the photographic medium to create chances of encounter with people my age. Photography passes from being a tool of hyperconnectivity based on instant sharing to being a tool for slowness and connection. We stay suspended for a few seconds, observing ourselves reflected, you and I united in unexpected ways."

On winning this award, Francesca’s work will be published in the Urbanautica Institute's award catalogue and journal, and also featured on the Urbanautica website.

"For years I have been observing and admiring the research and promotion of the work of artists led by Urbanautica, it really means a lot to me being among them today."
