We spoke to BA (Hons) Animation student, Guy Rathbone, on living in Leeds and studying at Leeds Arts University, what he specialises him and his plans after he graduates...
Why did you choose Leeds as a city and more specifically, Leeds Arts University?
Leeds is a really good city for students because it is very welcoming for people leaving home for the first time or who are new to the city. I liked the small cohort at Leeds Arts University which means you get to know students on all courses.
What made you select BA (Hons) Animation?
I originally applied for the BA (Hons) Illustration course but they felt I was more suited to Animation. I had always been interested in Animation but didn't have the confidence to take the leap. The tutors telling me they wanted me on the Animation course was really encouraging to hear, so that’s what I decided to do!
What do you specialise in? What exciting things are you working on at the moment?
I specialise in 2D character design and character animation. I am currently working on my final project of my second year which is a short animation. How does the University develop your practice? The University wants you to be able to think independently and to not just be a bot, to be able to think and act creatively. There is also a lot of push towards networking and meeting people within the industry early on. This prepares you, as you see what's out there and get talking to industry professionals.
What do you plan to do after university?
I am aiming to apply for an MA in a year’s time to further develop as an animator and designer. In the meantime, I intend to gain as much experience as I can in the animation industry
