Leeds Arts University Chancellor Skin visits music students

BA (Hons) Music Production

BMus (Hons) Popular Music Performance

We were thrilled to welcome back Skin – acclaimed recording artist, DJ, and lead singer of the multi-million-selling rock band Skunk Anansie – and her bandmate Ace, to the University this weekend for a workshop with our music students.

Skin and Ace took part in a Q&A and spoke with the students about their career and experience in the music industry. Selected students were also invited to perform their original music for Skin and Ace, who provided feedback on lyrics, performance and artistic identity. The session was filmed by our BA (Hons) Filmmaking students.

Students were also invited to the Skunk Anansie soundcheck at O2 Academy Leeds, where the band performed on Saturday 12 April as part of their European tour.

"It was a pleasure to be back at Leeds Arts University to see their music students perform with passion and skill. It was a brilliant session and I was blown away by some of their songs. We invited them to our soundcheck to explore our technical set up and it was inspiring to see how engaged they were. Hope to see them again soon!"

Skin, Leeds Arts University Chancellor

Skin became the first Chancellor of Leeds Arts University in 2021 and accepted another three years in the role in 2023. During her time as Chancellor, she has visited the University a number of times and gave a keynote speech at our graduation ceremony in 2023.

"Skin and Ace delivered an unforgettable workshop and Q&A for our students, offering not only insight into the music industry and their creative process, but also thoughtful, constructive feedback on student performances and recordings. They had an incredible way of linking each student’s artistic vision to a wider industry context, helping them understand how to shape their work in ways that remain authentic while also industry-ready. Students also had the rare chance to attend their soundcheck, stepping on stage and being talked through the band’s equipment setup – a practical and inspiring look behind the scenes of a professional live show."
