Filmmaking and Music students collaborate on short film scores

BMus (Hons) Popular Music Performance

Second year BA (Hons) Filmmaking and BMus (Hons) Popular Music Performance and BA (Hons) Music Production students recently came together for a collaborative mixer with a twist: composing a soundtrack in just one hour for the film students’ micro shorts.

The sessions were created by the filmmaking and music teams as part of the second-year curriculum and took place in the auditorium and music studios. The filmmakers watched their projects take on a new life as the original music was composed in situ, while the music students responded to a brief and delivered under time pressure.

The sessions are designed to simulate real industry scenarios. The creative industries are fluid, and graduates need to communicate and work across mediums, so sessions like this are embedded in the curriculum to help students build the contacts they will need after graduation.

“There was a great energy to the sessions, and the filmmakers saw their projects take on a different light through collaboration. It was lovely to watch two different creatives working together, and it really sums up the ethos and artistic practice at LAU.”

Tom Chimiack, Course Leader BA (Hons Filmmaking)

“In my own practice as a songwriter and performer, I have seen how valuable these collaborations are. Students who might otherwise work in isolation learn to pitch ideas, respond to feedback and deliver to a brief alongside peers from other disciplines, mirroring the way projects come together in the creative industries. The relationships formed often continue beyond the module, and students often go on to work professionally with the collaborators they first met in the classroom.”
