We spoke to BA (Hons) Photography student, Caitlin Hall, on studying at Leeds Arts University, why she loves Leeds and her plans for after graduating...
Why did you choose Leeds Arts University?
I chose Leeds Arts University because it was the closest arts institution to home and it has an amazing reputation. I had seen what some people had accomplished in the University and I found it inspirational. Looking round it was an obvious first choice for me!
What made you select BA (Hons) Photography?
I’ve always been fascinated with cinematography and film, this notion of telling a story really interests me and I like to recreate this one moment in time in my work. Since I was a child I have always been captivated by film and that massively inspires my photographic work. I love the contrast between bright cartoons and mature films such as Reservoir Dogs or Sin City; the sweet exterior with a bitter and twisted centre. I often explore these themes in Narrative Tableau photography.
What do you really enjoy about your course and the University?
The course allowed me to navigate which areas of Photography I wanted to focus on and changed my perception of the medium. The tutors give so much support and advice which is really helpful which allowed my work to blossom. Collaboration is also a huge part of the University and because it’s an arts institution it’s easier to connect. The University is also expanding this year so that photography gets a new building which is really exciting as this allows more photographic opportunities, studio space and equipment!
What do you plan to do after university?
In the future I hope to be a Fine Art Photographic Practitioner and mix genres; combining them with my favourite genre, Tableau. Being a Fine Art Photographer doesn’t give you the same narrow line of work as say fashion or commercial; although Tableau can be converted to suit almost every brief within a genre, as well as events photography. I am currently working hard to get my work out there, featured and noticed!
What makes Leeds a good place to study?
I thought moving to a city would be really scary and stressful but I have enjoyed my time in Leeds so much, I’ve found it to be a real eye opener. Leeds has great connections to surrounding cities, making attending art events and exhibitions outside of the city really easy to do. There are also many photographic venues and exhibitions on at any given time. It also has a vibrant night life and plenty of things to do throughout the day!
