We spoke to BA (Hons) Photography student, Alec Aarons, on studying at Leeds Arts University, why he loves Leeds and his plans for after graduating...
Why did you choose Leeds Arts University?
The outstanding reputation that the institution upholds is what first brought me to its attention. At the time of applying, the idea of entering an environment that was small and had a sense of community really appealed to me. The smaller classes and the personal relationships created with staff and peers is what makes Leeds Arts University stand out. This friendly environment is also met with exceptional facilities and Workshop Instructors, which makes developing new skills easily accessible.
What made you select BA (Hons) Photography?
I studied A-level Photography alongside Business Studies and Law. I didn’t have any prior experience with a camera but the creative environment made the subject extremely enjoyable. I had already applied for university to study Business Management before I came to realise that I should follow the drive I had obtained through studying Photography, so I dropped all my university offers to pursue my love for the subject.
What do you really enjoy about your course and the University?
The course has allowed me to discover why I made the right decision to study Photography as my chosen medium, the enthusiasm and guidance from the tutors has led me to discover my photographic voice through taking inspiration from artists, as well as learning the commercial applications in the wider industry. The relationships you build with other courses encourage collaborations to take place, introducing you to new skill sets from other artistic disciplines and using them to drive your own photographic identity.
What do you plan to do after university?
I have discovered an interest in the output of photography as well as the practice of making photographs, I would like to follow a career path in the form of an apprenticeship at a photobook publishing house or gallery space. My drive to make imagery will still be close to me and I will continue with personal projects.
What makes Leeds a good place to study?
The music scene in Leeds is what confirmed my decision to study here. I was already aware of many establishments as I grew up here, these venues see some of the most influential modern musical acts playing on a daily basis. Since studying in the city full time I have been introduced to a whole new community of underground artists and music lovers which have made the past three years a fantastic experience.
