We spoke to third year BA (Hons) Graphic Design student and Editor-In-Chief of our student magazine, Erin Blamire, on the exciting projects she is currently working on, her time studying at Leeds Arts University and her plans for after she graduates...
What do you specialise in and what are you working on at the minute?
I’m a graphic designer specialising in editorial design and publication production. I am currently working with my collective Shy Bairns on a series of collaborative publications for Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2018.
Shy Bairns is a multi-disciplinary collective specialising in DIY arts publications and workshops. We began life as a self-titled publication aiming to gather a group of Northern artists together on one platform. We now exist as something else; alongside our self-titled series we also curate, educate, and make a fuss about things on social media. We are interested in community, identity, Art World Politics and Real World Politics, and how print relates to all of these things.
How does Leeds Arts University help you develop your practice?
Leeds Arts University has provided me with so many important opportunities in my practice. Having access to the facilities in the university has really driven the physical aspects of my work, and the teaching on the course has been first class in terms of technical skills and access to the professional industries. The university has also allowed me to hold the unique position of Editor-In-Chief of NEST, our student magazine, which has opened up many more opportunities for editorial design work.
What do you plan to do after university?
After graduation I will be working with Shy Bairns and as a freelance graphic designer in Manchester.
