Games students pitch to Red Kite

BA (Hons) Games Art

BA (Hons) Games Design

Students from BA (Hons) Games Art and BA (Hons) Games Design were given the opportunity to present their ideas to award-winning studio Red Kite Games.

The students were asked to work in teams across the Games Art and Games Design degrees, and to utilise the skills of students from other courses, including BA (Hons) Creative Writing, BA (Hons) Acting for Screen, BMus (Hons) Popular Music Performance, and BA (Hons) Music Production.

Students were set a brief asking them to create a playable prototype for a game to include the themes of sustainability and the best films of the 1980s. They were asked to think about how to present the issues of sustainability in the modern world whilst still being entertaining for the audience.

“This brief was a great opportunity to work through the full game production cycle for the first time and get a feel for what it may be like in industry.”

Jake Rastrick, BA (Hons) Games Design

Taking inspiration from films such as The Dark Crystal, The Last Unicorn, and Blade Runner amongst others, the students worked in teams on everything from narrative, gameplay and design, illustration, world building, character design, 3D modelling, voice acting, and soundtrack.

The opportunity to work across courses gave the students a real-world experience, utilising skills and expertise from actors, musicians, and writers to bring their games to life.

“As a Games Art student, I have worked closely with Design students before, which is always very fun. Creative Writing collaborations always bring a unique perspective to a game's narrative, which always influences the art I produce. The music and acting collaboration was very exciting, as it made the whole 'making a game' experience very official, with awesome music setting the scene and our character coming to life with voice acting.”

Caitlin McKeag, BA (Hons) Games Art student

A panel from Red Kite Games was invited into the University to hear the students' presentations. Dave Blewett, Art Director, Matt McIntosh, Senior Artist, and Declan Larkins, Studio Marketing Executive, listened to each of the presentations and provided constructive feedback to each team.

“The pitch was great! I was a little nervous in the morning, and adrenaline was definitely at a high. These were some people with vast industry experience; it felt their opinion mattered deeply.”

Denny Tugwell, BA (Hons) Games Art student

At the end of the presentations the students were given an opportunity to ask questions to the panel, touching on topics such as specialisms within the industry and how to land your first role.
