Looked After Young People

At Leeds Arts University and as part of our commitment to our Access and Participation Plan we seek ways of supporting young people who are in care. If you are a Designated Teacher, Virtual School staff, Social worker or a Foster Carer please contact us about ways we can support your looked after young person into higher education.

Here are a few ways we can offer support:

Meetings with Foster Carers and LAYP Support Groups

We will be happy to host a Foster Carers or Support Group meeting on campus and to offer a short presentation on Progression activities on offer to raise aspiration of progression into higher education and into the creative arts.

A day out

Suitable for a holiday time activity for a group of looked after young people and their carers/ youth mentors. We will take a visit to a venue or collection; such as the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Leeds Museum, Leeds Art Gallery, supported by staff and student ambassadors and weave creative practice into the day.

Progression advice and guidance

The Progression team will meet with Care Leavers and LAYP Support teams to raise their knowledge of progression routes and opportunities in further and higher education particularly in art and design and progression towards the creative industries.

After School Art Club

Looked after young people and care leavers in School Year 9/11 can apply to join the free After School Art Club so that they gain additional opportunity to experience some of the specialist processes and facilities at the University. This opportunity builds up their creative skills, confidence and portfolio. It provides good preparation towards studying art and design beyond GCSE. These are currently offered online over 6 weeks per term.

Care Leavers

Leeds Arts University provides a raft of support throughout the application and transition into Further and Higher Education.

Here are a few ways we can offer support:

Nominated care leaver support

We have a dedicated care leaver contact, Elizabeth Crickmore, who can answer your questions regarding our courses and can discuss the support we can offer to care leavers who are considering coming to Leeds Arts University to study.

Please contact Elizabeth at elizabeth.crickmore@leeds-art.ac.uk or 0113 202 8253.

Indicating that you are a care leaver on the UCAS application form

Students applying to UCAS are asked if they are a care leaver or a looked after young person. We encourage care leavers to tick this box. This is important because there may be extra financial support available for Care Leavers, additional support from the nominated Care Leaver contact Elizabeth Crickmore and year round accommodation arrangements can be requested. Those applicants, who have ticked this box on the UCAS form, will be contacted by Elizabeth to find out if there is any additional support needed before the start of term.

In order for us to confirm that you meet the definition of a care leaver please could you send us documentary evidence in the form of a letter from your social worker or head teacher and email it to admissions@leeds-art.ac.uk.
