BA (Hons) Filmmaking - Lecturer

Joanna is a Lecturer on BA (Hons) Filmmaking. She is a socially-engaged artist filmmaker working with collaborative, experimental, and sustainable filmmaking practices – working with film and moving image across cinema, gallery and non-traditional screening contexts. Her films screen on the international film festival circuit, and she has worked for high profile partners including Tate, BFI Southbank, The Whitney Museum of American Art and FACT.

Joanna’s filmmaking practice foregrounds subjective, embodied and tactile modes of experimental storytelling. She employs hybrid techniques incorporating both analogue and digital technologies, using sustainable, alternative photographic methods for moving image-making.

Her research interests include ‘filmmedicine’ – exploring the therapeutic and transformational potentialities of place-based, participatory filmmaking to connect us to each other, our communities and the environments we live and work in. Her current work focuses on human relationships with urban nature through a study of rewilded brownfield sites, exploring place-making and worldbuilding through creative soundscapes.

Joanna works on BA (Hons) Filmmaking as a Lecturer across all levels, teaching, guiding and supporting students with their individual and collaborative practical work, academic and professional writing. Drawing on her background in community engagement and inclusive teaching practice, she is committed to supporting all students to reach their potential and realise their creative vision on the course and beyond.
