Foundation Diploma in Art and Design - Lecturer

Jane first arrived at Leeds Arts University (then Jacob Kramer College) in 1977 to study for their Commercial Design Diploma. Graduating in 1980, she spent the next decade working at various design companies and advertising agencies around the country – Leeds, Leicester and London (anywhere beginning with L)!

She began this career as a studio junior at Elmwood Design Consultancy and left as an associate partner/art director in a London Advertising agency working on a range of above-the-line brands creating advertising campaigns.

The five-year break saw her having her two children, moving back up north and working freelance for clients directly as both an art director or as a photographic stylist. This period also saw her managing a photographic library sourcing and selling images (of skies) to global companies for their ad campaigns and promotional work.

A chance meeting in 1997 with an old friend who happened to be Course Leader on the Illustration course at Leeds Arts University culminated with her being invited to deliver a talk on her design career to his students.

That was the start of her second career and she hasn’t left us since. During these 24 years, she has gained her teaching degree from the University of Leeds allowing her to fulfill tutoring roles across a wide range of FE and HE courses- from the Foundation Diploma and Extended Diploma through to BA (Hons) Graphic Design, BA (Hons) Visual Communication and BA (Hons) Creative Advertising (now known as BA (Hons) Marketing Communications).

In her current role on the Foundation Diploma in Art and Design, she enjoys seeing students find their practice through an exploration of diagnostic projects and graphic communication briefs and supporting them pastorally.
