Born in Leeds, Armitage won a scholarship to the University in 1934 where he studied for three years before entering the Slade School in 1937. He returned to Leeds in the 1950s as a Gregory Fellow at the University of Leeds.  The Kenneth Armitage Young Sculptor Prize is awarded annually to students of the art Universitys with which he had an association including Leeds Arts University. Students celebrate the 100^th anniversary of opening of the University’s 1903, Arts and Craft style building designed by Bedford and Kitson Architects. 

Mierins studied at the University from 1961 under Harry Thubron, then Head of Art.  On graduating he studied for a year at Goldsmiths University of Art in London, before being invited to return to teach drawing and art history at the University in 1965.

Edna Lumb (1931-1992) was educated at Leeds School of Art in the 1950s. She was awarded a travel scholarship to France, and later made a paint record of aid programmes in West Africa. Engines, pylons, quarries, cooling towers, and wheels (gear wheels, rail wheels, flywheels, water-wheels) were her perpetual subjects.

Garry Barker at the preview of his exhibition 'When the past overhauls the present, you will forget that you can't remember'. Garry is one of the longest serving members of the Fine Art department at Leeds Arts University, and was instrumental in developing what is now the Access to Art and Design programme.
