Ellie Radford, second-year BA (Hons) Textile Design student was announced as the outright winner of a live brief set by Bruntwood, a family-owned property company offering office space, serviced offices, retail space and virtual offices.

Students were asked to create a range of rug designs to be used in the new community hub space in Bruntwood’s redevelopment of West Village, a complex of 1970’s brick buildings located on Wellington Street, Leeds.

Along with winning prize money of £650, Ellie will now have the opportunity to work with Bruntwood and the rug manufacturer to see her designs developed through to production. The judges selected two runners up, Amy Carr, who won a prize of £150 and Robyn Jones who was awarded £50. However, they were so impressed with Amy’s designs they will also be taking one of these through to production.

“The talent and professionalism shown by your students was exemplary. Each of the entries was to a very high standard, with some excellent designs making our decisions very difficult. “Ellie’s designs seemed to resonate with the judging panel immediately - the colours, the level of detail, the complimentary nature of the two main designs - sufficiently different, yet still clearly by the same hand. Ellie has shown a sympathy and awareness of the themes underpinning the interior design at West Village, and created designs that align perfectly. It has been a pleasure working with the university on this project, and I look forward to steering it to a successful conclusion!”

“It has been a pleasure to work with Leeds Arts University students. Upholding the cultural vibrancy of our towns and cities is hugely important to us and this initiative was a great way to showcase local talent, while providing surprise and delight for customers in our spaces through the use of texture and colour. We look forward to working with the students throughout our redevelopment of West Village Leeds and beyond.”
