Hannah Rampley graduated in 2013 from BA (Hons) Printed Textiles & Surface Pattern Design.
Shortly after graduating Hannah was designing prints for the Australian launch of UK-based yoghurt company Rachel’s. Hannah had already worked with the restaurant chain Zizzi on their menus and murals after winning the Zizzi Fresh Talent competition in 2012, and food is a huge inspiration in her work.
We caught up with Hannah to ask her about the project and her time at Leeds Arts University.
You studied Printed Textiles & Surface Pattern design at the University - what were the key things you took away from the course?
I loved every minute of the Printed Textiles and Surface Pattern Design course. I loved the atmosphere, the creative encouragement from both staff and students and the variety of work that was produced was really inspiring. I could not have chosen a better course for me. It developed my style in a very subtle way and I feel extremely proud and happy that I attended the University.
What acts as your inspiration for your designs?
For some reason I am hugely inspired by food. I love the pattern found within natural objects and this originally inspired my love of drawing and designing with fruit motifs. I am also highly inspired by Scandinavian design and the colourful textile design of Josef Frank. I am very inspired by botanical design and I am hoping to produce a small line of floral fabric designs in the spring.
Could you tell me a bit more about your work with Rachel’s Yoghurts – how it came about, the brief, the process and outcome?
In July, I was contacted by a design agency in London who had found my work online and had been waiting for a perfect project to come about to contact me. When the Rachel's yoghurts campaign was mentioned I was really interested as it was perfect for my design style and I also loved the product too. Rachel's yoghurts were being launched in Australia and I was asked to design prints for the flavours of the yoghurts which would be used in advertising and as part of their branding. I loved the whole process and was so happy with the prints I produced for them. They are now used as advertisements on bus stops across Australia and in magazines. Two of the designs were screen printed in Australia and used as a backdrop for the advert photo shoot. The designs also make up a large part of their website design which is great to see.
What next?
I am now living in London working freelance for different companies and launching my own line of products in the next few months.
