Victoria Li, BA (Hons) Photography graduate, has won two prizes as part of this year’s Photo Go Taipei exhibition.
Photo Go Taipei brought together 30 selected artists to show their work over the course of a three-day event. The exhibition marked Victoria’s first time exhibiting to a Taiwanese audience, displaying her piece ‘Congruence · Modulo’.
Finding inspiration in her experience of regularly calculating exchange rates between HKD, GBP and TWD , the work explores “symbols, value, and identity through the currencies of Hong Kong, the UK, and Taiwan - the three places where I have sought settlement”. Working with coins of similar size and weight, Victoria experimented with photographing and wearing them down until their national symbols eroded, becoming indistinguishable from each other.

The exhibition employed a traditional Taiwanese “bando” format, which saw each exhibitor assigned a round banquet-style table to present their work. With part of ‘Congruence · Modulo’ involving a blind drawing test, Victoria utilised a barrier to isolate participants from the images they were tasked with recreating, instead relying solely on memory.
At the culmination of the exhibition, Victoria was awarded prizes in the Table Curatorial Awards and the Taiwan Image Maker Awards.

Following her success at Photo Go Taipei, Victoria’s practice will see her conducting deeper research alongside material experimentation, with further photobooks and exhibitions on the horizon.
