BA (Hons) Photography graduate Jackie Slater has been shortlisted for this year’s British Photography Awards.
The annual awards ceremony celebrates the best in UK-based photography talent across 20 categories. This year’s shortlist is made up of 500 images, with winners selected by a judging panel, as well as by public vote for the People’s Choice Award. Winners will be celebrated at an Awards Gala on Sunday 1 November.
Jackie’s work ‘Still, Life’, has been shortlisted in the Fine Art category, and shows a wall display of photographs from her series of the same name. The series, comprising of hundreds of photographs taken across a 3-year period, was taken at a local hospice, where Jackie provided a portrait service for individuals with life-limiting illnesses. For the display, photographs were printed onto acetate and held in film carriers, each accompanied by quotes from the subject. Seeing the images displayed in this way saw Jackie reflecting back on the project as a whole, as well as highlighting “the importance of printed images as memorials of the dead”.
