MA Illustration (now MA Illustration with Graphic Novel) student Chris King has been longlisted in the First Graphic Novel Award 2023 for his book, Wolves.

Wolves tells the tale of twelve-year-old Barry Thompson and his best friend Cheese who set out to spend their hard-earned pocket money in the amusement arcades of the northern English seaside town of Scarborough. During the course of their journey, the boys, who both come from contrasting dysfunctional families, come to grips with the harsh truth of growing up in a small seaside town that offers limited options in regards to their future.

Chris is one of just thirty people longlisted for the award, after submitting extracts of his work-in-progress to a judging panel of industry professionals. The shortlist will be announced on 10 November, and shortlisted entries will be displayed at Thought Bubble Festival in Harrogate from 10-12 November. The winner will be unveiled at an event held at Waterstones Piccadilly, London, on 11 December 2023.

The winner will be offered a publishing contract with SelfMadeHero, which includes an advance against royalties, editorial and design support to bring their work-in-progress project to fruition. They will also receive a £500 cash prize from The bks Agency, a literary and talent agency for authors.

"I feel really honoured that my proposed book Wolves has been longlisted for the first Graphic Novel Award 2023. I worked towards and on Wolves for the majority of my MA and it is really exciting to see how people react to the work now that it's out in the world. Being longlisted for the work is a real highlight. I am really looking forward to taking the project further in whatever way possible.”
