Leeds Arts University have partnered with property investment and development business MEPC to provide opportunities for students to showcase their work in Leeds city centre.

The Artist’s Window competition brief is part of a long-standing partnership with MEPC. Students are asked to submit designs to be exhibited in the windows of buildings on Wellington Place. Alongside the opportunity to showcase their work, winning students each received £1000 on completion of their commission. .

Five winning artists were selected from submissions across all courses, with work ranging from painting and photography to sculpture. Four of the art installations will be on display in the window of the recently completed 11 Wellington Place for three months on a rotational basis.

MA Illustration student Emma Jones is the first to exhibit. ‘Harebell, 2023’ is inspired by the natural beauty and wildlife of Leeds and Yorkshire, using repurposed papers to create collaged flowers native to the area.

A fifth artwork has been chosen for nearby 4 Wellington Place. ‘Window Collage, 2022’ by MA Creative Practice student Becky Long-Smith is a digital collage based on Wellington Place but centred around the idea of perception and how places, buildings, and cities mean different things to different people.

“The Artist’s Windows have been a brilliant addition to Wellington Place, so we couldn’t be happier to have continued the initiative for 11 Wellington Place, as well as extending the exhibition at number 4. The selected artworks are spectacular, and not only encapsulate our local area but put sustainability at the heart. We’re delighted to be showcasing these incredibly talented artists and providing a platform for more people to be able to enjoy them.”
