Further Education students selected for UAL Origins Creatives exhibition

Foundation Diploma in Art and Design

Extended Diploma in Creative Practice

Students John East and Reggie Ellison, Extended Diploma in Creative Practice, and Rachel Dunmore and Albert Moores, Foundation Diploma in Art and Design, have been selected to exhibit their work at Origins Creatives, taking place at the Mall Galleries in July.

Origins Creatives is organised by the UAL Awarding Body to provide a platform for young creatives from across the UK and internationally, connecting them with a wider audience including potential collaborators and industry leaders.

Reggie Ellison's submission ‘A Really Good Print’ is made from linoleum and calico. The image was created without pre-planning, and each element was designed, from the bottom upwards, to represent the feeling and mood of the artist at that particular moment, over a week. The lino-cutting took 50+ hours of painstakingly careful work and deep concentration. Reggie comments that the process "illustrates another, seemingly opposing neurodivergent trait: hyperfocus."

Neurodivergent people are often experts in masking their real selves. Here, when rolled neatly up, the reality of the chaos of the artist’s brain is hidden, until exposed, bit by bit, to reveal the full, glorious mayhem.

John East's submission ‘'Home away from Home’' is a documentary photography project exploring individuals and their spaces in the small coastal town of Bridlington. The project explores people in away from their homes, in their places of work, and observes how people treat and look after their spaces.

"I quickly found a visual interest in ‘organised clutter’, which is reflected in my images. I felt drawn towards the slight unevenness and imperfections of these spaces, making them feel more full of life and human. Exploring these maximalist spaces also helped me present an underlying observation on human materialism and the need to collect objects."

Rachel Dunmore is on the Graphic Communication pathway on Foundation Diploma in Art & Design.

Her submission ‘'Different and Yet the Same’' is an installation piece made from neon yellow perspex with shapes carved and engraved in it that represent her thought and speech patterns and the neuroplasticity of her brain.

"I suffered a stroke two years ago. This installation explains the changes I have experienced since then. The brain injury from the stroke resulted in communication difficulties. However, with the help of speech therapy, I have transformed my brain through neuroplastic rewiring to regain my ability to speak. Before the stroke, I could multitask across several activities, but my thoughts were more fragmented. Now, I experience linear and continuous thoughts, free from external distractions"

Albert Moores is on the Fashion & Textiles pathway of the Foundation Diploma in Art & Design.

His submission ‘'Proection' aims were to explore protective garments, inspired by full-body suits like those for diving, space or heat exposure. Aiming to focus on experimenting with new fabrics and creating designs that offer both physical and mental comfort and protection, taking cues from cocoons and hoods.

"My intended idea was to make an outfit that protected you against unphysical things I feel my outcome has been successful at keeping with this motive and gives the overall feeling of protection whilst not being apparent what it protects against, the fabric and futuristic design helps with this."
