Fine Art student awarded Kenneth Armitage Young Sculptor Prize

BA (Hons) Fine Art

Final year BA (Hons) Fine Art student Elrick Boldy has been awarded this year's Kenneth Armitage Young Sculptor Prize.

The Kenneth Armitage Young Sculptor Prize is a prestigious prize awarded annually to two final year undergraduate students specialising in sculpture at art schools with which Armitage had a close association.

Elrick Boldy’s work explores the boundaries between written language and shape using patinated, plasma cut steel. The work uses asemic writing, a wordless, semantic form that resembles writing but lacks specific linguistic meaning, with this scrawl-like mark making being transformed into sculpture, balancing the industrial nature of steel with organic, gestural shapes.

"We were impressed by the conceptual ideas of the work and Elrick Boldy’s handling of material. The script like forms cut from the steel sheets created rich cultural and historical resonances. The metal’s patina was visually beautiful, and the pieces were sensitively installed. An exceptionally mature presentation."

The award comes with a £3,000 prize to support the graduating student to develop their practice beyond their university studies.
