Fine Art graduate paints mural for Barnsley Civic’s reopening

BA (Hons) Fine Art

BA (Hons) Fine Art graduate, Jenny Beard, has been commissioned to paint a large mural for the reopening of Barnsley Civic Hall's Eldon Street entrance.

Barnsley’s long-awaited regeneration of its Civic Hall includes updates to the original entrance on Eldon Street, a new bar, flexible office space and creative community spaces for events and workshops which are available for hire.

Jenny Beard is a painter working within contemporary painting who uses abstract imagery to explore optical space, depth, and flatness. The work is open ended and explorative, dealing with the paradox of appropriating abstract marks for abstract paintings. Whilst the building was restored, Jenny Beard painted a mural to lead visitors through the Civic Hall’s newly designed entrance, through the building, and into the gallery.

"With this mural, the gestural motifs are scaled up, with a visible push and pull between digital language and traditional methods. The works flow and guide the eye within the space, acting as a wayfinding tool."

The grand reopening of Barnsley Civic’s iconic Eldon Street entrance took place on Saturday 14 September. The event marked a significant milestone in the ongoing story of a building steeped in heritage, culture, and community.

"This event is not only a reopening but also a reimagining of what Barnsley Civic is – to serve the people of Barnsley with a renewed programme of performances and gallery shows developed in consultation with them."

Anthony Baker, CEO and Artistic Director of Barnsley Civic
