Animation students celebrate wins at the Kodak/Nahemi Student Commercial Awards

BA (Hons) Animation

Talented first year BA (Hons) Animation students, Michael Dimsey and Siera Deshishku, picked up the award for Best Animation at the annual Kodak/Nahemi Student Commercial competition.

Students had to devise and make a 30 second commercial using one ten-minute roll of 16mm film provided free-of-charge by Kodak. They were provided with live briefs by the advertising agencies McCann, Libertine and TBWA, for McVities and Just Eat and the charities Ovarian Cancer Action and Action on Salt.

Michael and Siera’s award winning animation, 'Haunted by Hunger', was produced for Just Eat and saw them win the prize for Best Animation across all briefs, as well as placing third in the Just Eat brief category.

The Kodak/Nahemi student commercial awards were held at the historic Regent Street Cinema, London on Friday 31 May 2024. The competition is organised by Nahemi, the National Association for Higher Education in the Moving Image, and judged by a panel of representatives from the agencies that supplied the briefs; Sam Clark, Kodak’s Director of Sales, Motion Picture and Entertainment for Europe; and the chair of Nahemi.

“This was a really amazing double win! Michael and Siera are talented students with great ideas and good logic who came up with their award-winning idea with a little bit of help from some supporting instructors, Eddie Lockhart and Phil Peaurt to help with the more technical challenges of lighting and shutter settings. Siera and Michael’s award-winning film Haunted by Hunger just proves that you don’t need all the gear to have the great ideas!”

Ben Simpson, BA (Hons) Animation Senior Lecturer
