Animation Senior Lecturer exhibits new body of research

BA (Hons) Animation

Ben Simpson (a.k.a Doctor Simpo), Senior Lecturer on BA (Hons) Animation, will be exhibiting a body of research at YHA Boggle Hole youth hostel in Whitby throughout the summer.

The exhibition ‘Folkloric Feast of Sea and Shore’ showcases 13 collectible Risograph prints and posters, drawn from Ben’s research into folkloric creatures from across continents and cultures, all linked to the coast. Folklore and mythical creatures are Ben Simpson's passion as a creature designer and storyteller. Their universal stories, rooted in legends and nightmares, inspire and evoke wonder.

Artist-Researcher Doctor Simpo is a passionate storyteller, exploring the human spirit through Pictorial Sequential Narrative Art, seeking the universal story that unites us all. Driven by a desire to convey an inclusive, transcendent narrative, he aims to touch souls beyond words.

“In this exhibition, I have poured my heart into gathering creatures that resonate across continents and cultures; familiar yet uniquely named in different lands. These beings are woven into the fabric of our earliest memories and dreams, echoing themes that unite us all.”

Every print, postcard, and original framed artwork is available to purchase, with all proceeds supporting YHA’s "No Child Left Behind." This initiative gives children from low-income backgrounds the chance to experience residential adventures through the YHA.

'Folkloric Feast of Sea and Shoreline' opens at YHA Boggle Hole, Mill Beck, on Friday 19 June and runs until Monday 21 September 2026.
