Arthur Howard Guise (1931 – 2017) was a former student and lecturer at Leeds Arts University, then known as Leeds College of Art. A new presentation of previously unseen works will be exhibited at The Otley Courthouse throughout the summer.

Guise began his studies at the College in the 1950s, but was interrupted by a call to serve in the army. Upon his return, he took up a place at the Royal College of Art, where he gained the distinguished qualification of Designer of the Royal College of Art (Des RCA). He later returned to Leeds College of Art to teach, before joining Leeds Polytechnic as Senior Lecturer in Silversmithing and Jewellery where he remained in post for over 20 years.

Although widely respected as a silversmith, much of his work, beyond commissioned items, remained private during his lifetime. A designer, draftsman, precision metal craftsman, horologist, and photographer, Guise worked consistently for decades, creating a personal archive and visual record shaped by his commitment to the creative process and application of discipline.

For the first time, part of this hidden archive is being presented to the public in an exhibition held at The Courthouse, Otley, June – August 2026.

The exhibition will include Guise’s 2D work, including his photography and observational drawing, offering a first glimpse of his wider archive. Initiated by his daughter, Alice Guise, this exhibition forms part of a project that includes the launch of a website, providing an ongoing platform for the collection, bringing together images and contextual material relating to Guise’s life and work.

Guise remained a keen supporter of the University throughout his lifetime, sharing fond memories at reunion events and donating to the Alumni Fund, which supports current students to access opportunities that might otherwise be unaffordable to them.

The exhibition will open at The Otley Courthouse in June 2026 and will remain on display throughout the summer. Information about the exhibition and the A.H.Guise Archive can be found at www.ahguise.com.
