You are warmly invited to the viewing of the 'From Tiger to Anansi' animation at Leeds Arts University. This will be followed by a short class on drawing animals, led by Ben Simpson (a.k.a Doctor Simpo), BA (Hons) Animation Senior Lecturer. It is also an opportunity to view the Beyond the Frame Further Education Show, featuring the work of our Extended Diploma in Creative Practice and Foundation Diploma in Art and Design students.

'From Tiger to Anansi' is a short animation, co-created by participants of the Leeds Arts University Progression Summer School and delegates of the Thought Bubble Comic Convention. The animation tells a story from the collection of Anansi tales, Anansi the Spider Man, collected by Philip M. Sherlock.

The Anansi animation project was Initiated by; Eddie Lockhart, Instructor of Photography and Film; Ben Simpson (a.k.a Doctor Simpo), BA (Hons) Animation Senior Lecturer; in conjunction with the University's Progression team. The many contributors to the film range between school year 7 -13.

"The history of the Anansi stories is that they are stories with a life lesson for the listener. They are to Africa what the Grimms fairy tales are to Europe (but less complicated). These are the stories that would be told by my uncle when I was a child. The project had to be halted during the pandemic but the murder of George Floyd gave me the impetus to have the project completed. My motivation for sharing the story is that the world needs to come together and share what it has whether it be wealth or culture, and give respect to one another.”

Eddie Lockhart, Instructor of Photography and Film
