Sam Hutchinson is a multidisciplinary artist, photographer, and creative director, based in Leeds. He is the founder and editor-in-chief at BOOT MAG, and works for Village.

After graduating from BA (Hons) Photography in 2014, Sam was selected as the first artist to exhibit at Assembly House Gallery, Leeds, followed by a solo exhibition ‘I Used to Think You Were Normal’ at Open Eye Gallery, Liverpool. His latest exhibition, ‘Infinite Glare’, opens at Season 4 Episode 6, London, from 31 July – 29 August 2026.

Sam’s practice explores the “middle ground between the physical and the digital”, exploring the “representation and reality of objects” through photography, sculpture, installation, found imagery and bookmaking.

“I always say, first and foremost, I'm a photographer, but I am more so a conceptual artist that works with photography. The fun thing about working with photography is that it covers such a broad conceptual field; you can work just with a camera, or you can work studying what it means to like make images today.”

Introduced to photography through punk and skateboarding culture, Sam’s initial ventures into the world of photography were through affordable film and video cameras, something he credits as giving him the ability to “look at architecture in the city with a different eye”. This period also led to Sam discovering DIY production methods, exchanging self-printed t-shirts and zines amongst friends and connections made online. Taken by the zine’s ability to connect to audiences and noting how “photography lends itself really naturally to printed mediums”, publishing has gone on to play a significant part of Sam’s creative output.

As well as publishing his own work, Sam handles design and publishing at Village, and serves as editor-in-chief at BOOT MAG, a magazine and publishing platform which he founded in 2023. Now on its fourth issue, BOOT MAG explores “the politics of image-based work”, with each edition drawing on images and written work from an international cohort of artists around a theme.

“I just really like putting something out there that’s cheap and accessible, but doesn't lack the quality or the printing that it needs to really boost these people's work. And it's just so fun. I'm always really humbled when people who I look up to also get what it is that I do, and are really keen to work together on putting something out there that shows their work through my curatorial vision.”

Alongside his artistic practice, Sam works as creative director at The National Skateboard Co, and as a commercial photographer. With previous clients including Vans X END Clothing and adidas / Factory International, his commissions often explore how products can be utilised as art-based sculpture, “making something that represents a brand and a product, but also is my style”.

“It was great to have the time, space and facilities at Leeds Arts University, making connections with people whose work I really respected and having the time to develop work so that once you leave, you already have a network of people, galleries and studios on your doorstep.”
