Dr James Bagshaw is Course Leader for BSc (Hons) Creative Technologies and a Senior Lecturer in BA (Hons) Music Production at Leeds Arts University. His work sits at the intersection of music, technology, and spatial practice, with a research specialism in spatial audio and Ambisonics, particularly Higher Order Ambisonic (HOA) systems.
James is a music producer, composer, and technologist whose teaching and research are grounded in contemporary production practice. He leads the development of the Creative Technologies curriculum, and contributes to curriculum development across Music Production, designing learning experiences that integrate studio recording, electronic music production, sound design, and emerging creative technologies. His approach emphasises experimentation, critical listening, and applied technical fluency, preparing students for diverse creative and technical roles.
As an active researcher, James investigates the relationship between composer, space, and loudspeaker systems, treating spatial systems and architectural contexts as creative parameters within the compositional process. His research is practice-based and interdisciplinary, bridging composition, technology, and site-responsive work.
James completed his PhD at the University of Hull and holds degrees in BA (Hons) Music Production and MusM Electroacoustic Composition. He is the founder of the Ambisonic Music Library label and releases electronic music under the artist name Lasso Skinny.
Alongside his academic practice, James is a collaborative interdisciplinary artist, with recent public work including 'Spirograph Reimagined'Â for Leeds Light Night 2025. He is a member of the University research committee and remains actively engaged in the development of pedagogy, research culture, and technological innovation within higher education, maintaining a close relationship with current industry tools, workflows, and creative practice.
