Amina Naheem is the founder of Pickled Magazine, and graduated from BA (Hons) Visual Communication in 2025.

Amina’s interest in print and publications was sparked in her first year of studying at the University, after a session where she was introduced to the library’s special collection. After seeing the variety of printed work and possibilities of the format, she was inspired to start creating publications of all kinds for her projects and course submissions.

“We got to see the special collection and from then on, I was just like, wow, you can do so much with books and publications, from different paper types to imagery, visuals and layouts. It’s just as creative as anything else and I really took that on.”

The initial idea for Pickled Magazine came during Amina’s final year, after being motivated to “give people a leg up to get their work out” by creating a publication dedicated to showcasing work from writers and visual artists. In November 2025, she set about bringing the magazine to life for its first edition, titled ‘Brine’. Focusing on work evoking “raw, sweet and sour emotions”, the issue spotlighted a curated selection of artists and writers from around the world, including fellow Leeds Arts University graduates Mah-Noor Anwar, Lily Mae Dalleau-White, RochĂ© Idrees, and Bailey Martin.

Amina is involved across all aspects of the planning and production of the publication, including liaising with printers, finding artists, copywriting, designing the magazine, marketing on social media and organising launch events. ‘Brine’ released in June 2026 with a launch party at Leeds venue Vinyl Grounds, and is stocked in independent print and magazine retailers across the North, including Village and Unitom.

“The biggest achievement with Pickled Magazine has definitely been the feedback. So many people have reached out to me saying that Pickled has given them the motivation to get back to their creativity and put their head down and work on their art.”

The second issue, ‘Roots’, is currently in the works, centring around the theme of connecting with the world around us, and “allowing yourself to present in what’s real”.

“One of the best parts of university was definitely the people that I've met. Whenever I give them any type of idea that I'm thinking of, they will motivate me to go for it. It gave me a “why not?” attitude, and being in an arts university there are endless possibilities for how your creative career can grow.”
