We caught up with BA (Hons) Animation student Becky about studying in the UK, what inspires her work and her plans after graduation...

What made you chose to study BA (Hons) Animation?

Initially I decided to continue my studies in Illustration, but changed my mind as I thought that a course in Animation would be so much more helpful to me when the time comes for me to enter the art industry.

What do you enjoy about the course?

Aside from the fact that all of my lecturers are the biggest sweethearts ever, there is just so much to learn from this course, I have already had a hands on try with numerous software during my first term. Another thing I find enjoyable is the freedom to move about the school once we got down to work, we were never really forced to stay put in just one classroom unless there was a lecture going on.

What are the studios and facilities like at the University?

I was really surprised about how up to date everything was, sometimes I end up sneaking off to look at the other facilities used by the Illustration, Fashion and Graphic Design students (seeing that the classrooms are all set up so differently from one another, it is really quite interesting to look at!).

What are you currently working on and what area do you specialise in?

Presently I am designing some T-shirts to put up for sale on RedBubble, as well as working on concepts for a few storybooks and drawing up some original works to put on my portfolio website and drawing fan art to let off some steam. You could say I specialise in silly fan art, but I suppose I also specialise in horror and fantasy illustrations.

Where do you draw your inspiration?

Mostly video games and music, sometimes comics and manga. These days I do try to take the advice of others and gather my inspiration from real life experiences.

What do you plan to do after University?

I will most probably be returning back to Singapore, I can't really say for certain what I will be doing after that, but I will most probably be working as a freelancer.

How would you describe Leeds as a city?

It is quite peaceful, beautiful, clean and has almost everything I need, I am really glad that I chose to study here in the end.
