Academic Requirements for Foundation Diploma in Art & Design

We will consider all international qualifications specific to your country or region that are equivalent to those below. Please see Information by Country to check the entry requirements for your country. 

A-levels: You are required to achieve a minimum of 72 UCAS points. This is equivalent to two or three A levels (typically DDD). You will also need four GCSE’s including English and Maths at grade 4 or above (or equivalent international qualifications). Your application must be supported by a portfolio of work.

International Baccalaureate: A minimum of 3 Certificates - 2 HL and 1 SL (with minimum Grade 4 in each) with an overall score of equivalent to at least 72 UCAS tariff points. Your application must be supported by a portfolio of work.

US curriculum: High School Graduation Diploma with a minimum overall GPA of 3.0. Your application must be supported by a portfolio of work.

English language: You must have a minimum IELTS for UKVI overall score of 5.0, with no individual component below 4.5. Find out more about our English Language requirements.

Academic Requirements for BA (Hons) Undergraduate courses

We will consider all international qualifications specific to your country or region that are equivalent to those below. Please see Information by Country to check the entry requirements for your country.

A-levels: 112 UCAS points (BBC) including an art/design-related subject supported by a portfolio of work

International Baccalaureate Diploma: Successful completion of the IB Diploma Programme with a minimum of 26 points or the equivalent of 112 UCAS tariff points, including an art/design-related subject, supported by a portfolio of work

US curriculum: Successful completion of the USA High School Graduation Diploma with a GPA of 3.0

PLUS:

Redesigned SAT Reasoning Test with minimum scores of 550 in each component (evidence-based reading and writing and mathematics)

OR

ACT with a minimum composite score of 23

PLUS:

2 x SAT Subject Tests (550 in each)

OR

2 x AP tests (grade 3 in each)

A combination of AP and SAT Subject Tests is acceptable.

BTEC Extended Diploma: DMM

BTEC Diploma: DD

UAL Extended Diploma: Merit

UAL Foundation Diploma: Distinction

Exceptionally we will consider students who do not have art/design as part of their main study but have a portfolio which demonstrates their potential to succeed in the programme to which they are applying.

You must have a minimum IELTS overall score of 5.5, with no individual component below 5.5. Find out more about our English Language requirements. 

Academic Requirements for Postgraduate courses

Successful completion of an undergraduate degree from a recognised institution, normally in a relevant subject or a relevant professional qualification at an equivalent level, supported by a portfolio of work.

Candidates holding other academic qualifications will also be considered for admission provided they have substantial relevant professional experience and a portfolio of work.

For MA Creative Practice please include a proposal with your application outlining the area of practice you wish to develop, what you hope to achieve, a bibliography of books and resources you intend to use and the facilities and support you believe you will need.

We assess your application against our academic requirements and invite shortlisted candidates to upload/submit their portfolio. 

If you're already in the UK - you may have the option to visit the University in person to discuss your portfolio with our academic staff. Please contact us for more information regarding this. 

Outside the UK - for students not in the UK, our academic staff will review your portfolio. Assuming you are successful, we will be in touch with the conditions of your offer!

What happens next? Postgraduate courses

We will review your application and portfolio, and invite shortlisted candidates to attend an online interview. 

Preparing and submitting your portfolio

Your portfolio is an important part of the application process. It is a collection of your work demonstrating how your skills and ideas have developed over time and helps us to evaluate your potential to succeed.

Your portfolio could include the following:

  • A selection of art and design work completed as part of a course of study at school or University
  • Work you have done out of personal interest
  • Copies of pages from your electronic or paper notebooks or sketchbooks
  • If you wish, your submission can also include work in progress

Please submit your portfolio or samples of work by sending a link or attachments to international@leeds-art.ac.uk (*.doc, *.pdf or *.jpg formats only). Please include your full name (UCAS ID if appropriate) and the course you are applying to in the subject line.

If the images are too big for an email, please send them via WeTransfer.
