We spoke to BA (Hons) Creative Advertising student Charlotte Bailey about why she chose Leeds, what inspires her and what her plans are after graduating...
Why did you choose Leeds Arts University?
I chose Leeds Arts University because from A-Levels I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do so decided to choose the Foundation Diploma in Art & Design and from then loved it so much that I decided to stay on for degree level.
What made you select BA (Hons) Creative Advertising?
I chose Creative Advertising because I felt that it combined everything I enjoyed - Art, Psychology and English - but also that it was a course I felt would give me a lot of opportunities as it is such a broad subject.
What do you really enjoy about your course and the University?
I really enjoy that it doesn’t feel like I’m coming into uni but an extension of my home. The tutors feel more like life mentors than teachers and it is a really light-hearted and fun atmosphere with everyone on my course. The University as a whole is a small knit community and everyone goes out of their way to help you.
What are the studios and facilities like at the University?
The studios (particularly Creative Advertising) are very fun, communal and comfortable. Having an upstairs mezzanine level is a nice hang out when you fancy a break! The facilities are great, there is opportunity for you to try everything and expand your skills.
What is your best piece of work? - What area do you specialise in?
I would probably say my best piece of work is the first piece of work I did in third year, the brief really helped me to get engrossed and get some good insights from it. I feel that I would sway more towards copywriting as I think of ideas mostly in words but I do find art direction fun too.
Where do you draw your inspiration from?
I get my inspiration from not sitting at a blank page! Walking around, reading things, TV shows or even have brain waves in the shower!
What do you plan to do after university?
I want to have a bit of time off and travel, then get into the industry ideally in Leeds or London doing copywriting or accounts.
Tell us what you like about Leeds?
Leeds is like a little London. There is so much to do and there’s always something going on but it’s still small enough that you can get around. It’s such a student hub, there’s so many like-minded people around.
