The aim of this project was to create a sportswear brand which could be successful in the contemporary market. The desired deliverables were a brand with logo and visual identity, brand guidelines, proposed brand event advert/campaign and social media and website outlets. The sportswear market is very saturated so this project went through several developmental stages in order to find the correct brand approach. The developmental stages of this brief led me to a more definitive brand approach  by focussing on futsal. I see futsal as a variant of football which has not been fully exploited by major sportswear brands and has huge potential.

The Old Time: Taipei project aims to raise people’s awareness to conserve the essential cultural resource in Taiwan. These days the government focus is on renewal and reconstruction, an urban-rural place to improve the quality of life between the city and the countryside. However, some essential elements of Taiwanese architecture culture has been knocked down and is gradually disappearing. Also, less awareness caused by the speed of cultural resource conservation cannot catch up with the reconstruction.

Therefore, the project aims to encourage people to engage deeply and personally to raise people’s awareness to conserve the essential cultural resource. I also aim to motivate interest and open the conversation among people.

The illustration book shows the collection of houses and the features of each essential element. Through visitors collecting, to conserve the critical aspect of the cultural heritage of the place. A series of cards are also attached to the booklet, but the design only shows some part of the house, in order to arouse the interest of visitors to find out the detailed part of the houses’ appearance.

Both cards and illustration give ways for them to share or collect the memories physically to celebrate these old-time memories.

Since I am a graphic designer with a creative advertising background, I have found significant correspondence between these two specialist fields; we do the design to solve the problem. There is an objective, message, theme, meaning or issue that my artwork was designed for. Although I mostly work on digital and screen, I love seeing my artwork print out in a physical version.

I mainly use colour, layout and illustration to finish and enhance my artwork. As I believe colour can communicate a message, inspire mood and meaning, and present a character of the work to the audience that the designer desires. Thus, I am a person who is passionate in exploring colour usage and the relationship of colour. As an Art Director, I endeavour to make design that embraces both function and aesthetic.

This piece is titled ‘Memory Lane’ and its aim is to capture the nostalgic feelings toward British seaside holiday resorts, it is specifically focusing on Blackpool. The project breaks down different typefaces and their construction to show how memories and nostalgia can be personified strongly by using type. Classic music hall posters, Victorian fun fair signage and shop front signs influenced the style of this piece. The project involved real memories from interviews with locals and tourists, all of the words used in the project are from these people.

To me the outcome of this project has been able to show what memories mean to people and what it looks like when we try and visually represent them, the mural was inspired by Blackpool’s famous ‘Comedy Carpet’ in the hope to bring both locals and tourists together to envision a brighter future for Blackpool’s seafront.

The mural is successful in breaking down nostalgia into typefaces and fonts and building back up again what it means to actually experience memories. It shows how collective nostalgia seems to work in a way that individual reminiscing does not, being part of a community and be- longing to these memories is so important to these people and I think this public art piece displays this community in the most positive way.

Hello, my name is Yaling Li, I’m currently a final year MA student major in visual communication in Sichuan Fine Art Institute and just got my first Masters degree from Leeds Arts University in graphic design.

In my MA learning period in the UK, different exploration and research methods were experienced by me, my view and cognition widely expanded by these different experiences, I realised more possibility in the world and met more friends who come from different countries. Even one year is not enough to explore the variety of research and design methods, however, I still feel grateful for my tutors’ guidance and classmates’ encouragement, helping me finish my final work. Specifically, my final work is designing a typeface learning book for children studying in elementary school, and the most impressive thing is exploring better learning experience for children in their initial reading stage, such as hand craft, sketch, hand gesture, and the relevant visual image attached with this introduction.

If you are interested in my work or experience, please contact me directly, thank you.
