Textile Design student wins yoga mat design competition

02 June 2021

Second year BA (Hons) Textile Design student Amy Middlemiss has been announced as the winner of a competition to design a yoga mat for eco-friendly brand With Every Atom.

Students from across the country were asked to submit a gender neutral and eco-friendly design that uses colour and graphic designs and challenges conventional gender roles in yoga.

Amy was chosen as the overall winner. Her design uses postmodern architecture as visual reference to capture the fluidity in yoga, stretching the motif to replicate the flow of movement and encourage flexibility. Her colour palette is designed to uplift and energise, whilst also taking influence from muted earthy colour design trends to bring a calming feel and encourage mindfulness on the mat.

Amy said: “Winning this competition has been an incredible experience; to have my design go into production and made into a physical item is so exciting. The enthusiasm and support in my work that ‘with Every Atom’ has shown, has been so supportive and lovely and I cannot wait to see my design come to life. Having my work out there really means the world and has given me confidence to excel in third year.

"I really enjoyed this project and I am so delighted to be working with every atom again as their intern and super excited to see my design come to life in production as well as learning from them. The insight into the industry I will gain by following the process from start to finish will be so valuable.”

Alongside her cash prize, Amy will now have the opportunity to shadow With Every Atom’s founder, Amber O’Keeffe, as her design is put into production before being released for sale.
