Hannah Wilkinson, a student from the BA (Hons) Printed Textiles & Surface Pattern Design degree has won the Designext award at Surtex.
Designext at Surtex is an international student design competition which honours outstanding art and design students for exceptional surface design work.
Each year Surtex select four winners as part of their Designext competition. This year the theme was ‘The New Urban Grunge’, a fashion trend consisting of florals, embroidery, stripes, camouflage, denim, leather and pops of colour.
Hannah won with her design to re-imagine the ‘New Urban Grunge; she created six original surface designs. Her designs were applied to the surface of products and presented as a collection for the ‘work’ category, where she created designs for interior office furnishing (furniture, upholstery, floor and wall coverings).
Hannah will attend a prestigious awards show held in New York in May. As part of her prize, she is given a stand at Surtex to showcase her collection and network with industry professionals. This will include press, promotional materials, conferences seminars, as well as having her work professionally critiqued.
On winning at Surtex Hannah said:-
“I couldn’t quite believe it when I found out that I had won, especially as the competition is open to design students internationally. I can’t wait to travel to New York and to exhibit my work at the show alongside industry professionals. It’s a fantastic opportunity for me and I believe that it will give me an excellent start on my career as a designer. I am now busy working on interior wall coverings and furnishing designs that I hope to exhibit at the show”
