Tam Nguyen, second year BA (Hons) Animation student, was commissioned to create a mascot to be used to promote Rockscape Energy.
The family-run business worked with the University’s Careers, Enterprise and Employability team to deliver a brief to students for a character/mascot to be used for promotional purposes by the company, and in a new animation to be used by local schools. Rockscape Energy deliver innovative renewable energy and sustainable agricultural solutions and were looking for a design that reflected their company ethos. Tam’s winning design was selected from 19 entries, and will be awarded a fee of £300 for the work.
Tam describes the submission: “After careful consideration of the business' values and services, I designed the mascot to embody a more modern approach to energy and agriculture. The mascot is mainly made up of square and rectangular shapes for a stable future (sustainability) and matches the logo, I also incorporate triangular shapes and curves for the limbs and leaves that connect with nature and shows that it can be quick to adapt to changes and makes it look more fun. I added glasses for a more inventive look and to connect with the science and tech side of the business. The colours used stay true with Rockscape's logo and inspire by nature.
I kept the overall design simple for ease of use across a different range of items like animation, plushies, stickers, and promotional material while still keeping the appeal of the character and getting the business values across.”
Carrie Dodge, Plant Manager at Rockscape Energy said: “Tam captured the vision and ethos of our company perfectly. Tam took my early ideas of an animation thought to creating a character that is infectious, current, and reflective of Rockscape. I am absolutely delighted with the design and would like to take this opportunity to congratulate and thank Tam.”
