The second annual Ruth Selina Memorial Prize has been awarded to Leeds Arts University Foundation Diploma student Elly Simpson.
The prize is awarded in memory of Ruth Selina who completed the Foundation Diploma in Art & Design at Leeds Arts University in 2018 and sadly passed away in the first year of her degree course.

The prize is awarded at the opening of the Foundation Diploma 2021 Show, it includes an award of £500 and is presented to a student in the Fine Art Specialist area with qualities that mirror Ruth’s own – a sensitive awareness, and a determination and thirst for knowledge while remaining humble and engaged.
Judge Jenny West said: “I enjoyed the playful yet ominous content of this performance video work - suggestive of a darker undercurrent.”
Elly Simpson said: “I feel very grateful to have been chosen for the Ruth Selina prize this year, especially amongst so many skilful practitioners on the foundation course. The tutors have really helped me to expand my creative craft, alongside my peers encouraging open conversations about my work. I am very excited to develop my creative practice further using the knowledge and independence I have gained this year.”
