As the 170th anniversary celebrations continue, Leeds College of Art welcomes back London based Surrealist artist Patrick Hughes, who taught at the college in the 1960s. The exhibition Patrick Hughes: Forwards to Backwards opened on Thursday 11 August and runs until Friday 9 September 2016.

Patrick Hughes is the initiator of ‘reverspective’, a mode of relief painting which plays with the logic of perspective, several examples of which are will be on display in the gallery at Vernon Street until 9 September. Also on display is Ouroborus, a sculpture created by Hughes in the Leeds College of Art ceramics department in 1969.

As well as a chance to preview the exhibition, the opening event was an opportunity for former staff and students to revisit their old college, some for the first time in fifty years. Patrick Hughes welcomed back old friends to the College and enjoyed their reactions to his work.
“I am so very happy and honoured to be invited to exhibit my pictures at Leeds College of Art, more than fifty years after I started out teaching art here. At the opening at Vernon Street I met again many old colleagues and students enjoying my work by wiggling about in front of it” Patrick Hughes.

We would like to thank Ian Hinchliffe for his photographs of the evening, as well as Flowers Gallery for their support with the exhibition and for providing further images of Patrick Hughes work. We are also hugely grateful to Mr Hughes for his generous donation of a bursary fund to the College in honour of his friend and artist Anthony Earnshaw (1924-2001).
