Postgraduate students from our MA Illustration with Graphic Novel course have had their comic featured in Brighton based BN1 magazine for their Freedom themed issue.

Students Alice McCall, Holly Brown, Molly Halson and Eden Avery Goldingay created the comic to highlight issues of period poverty and ocean pollution.

Each student drew a page of the comic responding to the theme of the issue: Freedom. The comic uses mermaid imagery to communicate the reality of women living in period poverty, and existing in a world with increasingly polluted oceans.

Freedom, the artists told us, means freedom from societal expectations, poverty, and freedom from ingesting polluted waters.

You can read the comic in the April issue of BN1 magazine here.

Previous students have also had their work featured in BN1. You can download and read the comic here.
