Third year BA (Hons) Fashion students created their own ‘Subtraction Cut’ garments after a two day workshop with visiting professional Julian Roberts in January. Roberts developed the Subtraction Cutting technique which focuses on the removal of fabric rather than the addition of it. The technique involves designing with patterns and considers the creation of hollow space around the shape of the body.
In his demonstration, Roberts raised the importance of realising that patterns contain movement and tell a story, resulting in the finished garment. Roberts is based in the UK as a Fashion Designer and gives cutting demonstrations all over the world, teaching his unique method for creating garments.
