Illustration student brightens up town centre with Pavilion artwork

Final year BA (Hons) Illustration student Ekaterina Sheath was commissioned by Leeds City Council to create and install a public art work as part of a larger regeneration project in Morley.

With support from Morley Community Archives Kat began by researching the history of the now disused New Pavilion, which began entertaining the people of Morley in 1911. Opened originally as a theatre, the New Pavilion has welcomed cinemagoers, bingo lovers and even nightclubbers before eventually closing in 2005.

Kat’s design aims to bring back the history of the Pavilion through the stories and memories of those who experienced it. She includes elements of the building; with the original stained-glass windows, ornate gates and the sculpted façade reflected in the design’s large abstract shapes, alongside images of people enjoying various past-times with the characters based on people who walked past while she was drawing on location.

The project was funded through the Morley Towns Fund, a scheme designed to support the regeneration and ‘levelling-up’ of the town though a programme of projects including pedestrianisation and public realm schemes, parks improvements and new public artwork.
