Graduates win at YCN Student Awards

28 September 2018

Recent BA (Hons) Graphic Design Graduates Erin Blamire & George Wilson have won a student award commendation at the YCN Student Awards 2018.

The YCN Student Awards aim to stimulate, elevate and celebrate the freshest creative thinking around the world. Centred on a collection of modern design and communication challenges, students enter their work through a series of creative live briefs. The programme is open to students and recent graduates anywhere in the world.

The pair won with their Bucket artwork concept for KFC, created to engage consumers in the brand and in turn allow them to have a voice within the company.

We asked Erin Blamire about the thinking behind their artwork:

This project originated with the creation of a bespoke typeface - Chicken Wingdings. A contemporary twist on the original and iconic Wingdings typeface, this version was created using the shapes of KFC’s original recipe chicken, and adds a humorous element that consumers can connect and interact with.

The typeface was then adapted to create an interactive sticker pack that would be distributed alongside the buckets. The hashtag #FeastMeans was formed to work in conjunction with the buckets, to act as a prompt and encourage consumers to question what a KFC feast means to them. Consumers are encouraged to answer this question and customise their buckets with the Chicken Wingdings typeface.

They received their award at a ceremony at the Barbican Centre in London on 17 September.
