Graduates create Hyde Park murals

14 August 2019

Two recent BA (Hons) Printed Textiles and Surface Pattern Design graduates were chosen to create murals for the 2019 Colour Hyde Park project.

Maya Cross and Joy Rooney were selected by a community panel to develop their designs and paint murals in the Hyde Park area.

Joy told us:

“The brief of the project was to create artwork which showed appreciation for the diverse community of Hyde Park. I used the buildings and landmarks within the community to create a fun quirky design which will hopefully brighten up the place!”

The project was developed by University of Leeds in collaboration with local artists and the Hyde Park neighbourhood to deliver a community mural project which would inspire the community to feel pride and ownership for the place they live.

Another Printed Textiles and Surface Pattern Design graduate, Fem Sorcell who graduated in 2013, ran workshops with children at Brudenell Primary School, incorporating their ideas into her design.

A mural map has been designed to show the locations of the six murals, alongside biographies from the six artists involved. The map can be downloaded here.
