Faun Material: An MA Fine Art exhibition

23 August 2021

Faun Material was a two-part exhibition project featuring students from the University’s MA Fine Art course as part of their module The Encounter.

Faun Material (Part 1) was installed at The Art House, Wakefield in April 2021, but due to lockdown restrictions was never opened to the public; the exhibiting students made a documentary film as an alternative means to engage with the work. Faun Material (Part 2) was a public group exhibition taking place at The Middle Floor, Wharf Chambers, Leeds.

Extensive documentation of both Parts is hosted on www.faunmaterial.co.uk, a dedicated website for the project. MA Graphic Design students Harriet Burns and Matilda Cracknell were commissioned to produce critical written responses to the project, which are also hosted on the website.

Dr David Steans, Subject Specialist MA Fine Art said: "These students showed remarkable ingenuity and dedication, pulling off an ambitious, multi-faceted project in unprecedented times. Nothing about art or exhibition practice can be taken for granted, and projects such as Faun Material help us think through how and why we strive to produce art and engage audiences. The website will function as both a longer-term presentation of these exhibitions, and as a growing archive of projects and activities by future MA Fine Art students here at Leeds Arts University."
