Colourful mural brightens up £22m expansion site

Hana Skarratt’s colourful designs are brightening up the roadside next to the University’s £22m expansion on Blenheim Walk.

The mural by BA (Hons) Illustration graduate Hana was chosen as the winner following a University competition to design hoardings to run alongside the busy entrance to the city centre.

Hana picked up the £500 prize with her winning design, which was inspired by the wide range of creative courses and activities undertaken by students.

"I wanted to portray the idea of playfulness and exploration though characterising each department in the university," said Hana. "The bright colours and paint splatter travelling through the panels connects each department together, representing the collaborative and supportive nature of creativity within the arts.”

While producing her artwork, Hana worked with Sheffield-based design agency Peter & Paul, whose clients include the University, BBC and the Big Lottery Fund.

The new state-of-the-art building, being built by global construction services company ISG, is due to open next summer. It will house new courses including BA (Hons) Filmmaking and BMus (Hons) Popular Music Performance. New facilities will include a 230 seat auditorium, music, film and photography studios and a larger specialist arts library. There will also be an open plan atrium-style entrance with a public exhibition gallery, coffee shop and urban roof garden.
