Dr. Sam Broadhead, Head of Research, will be launching her new book ‘Practical Wisdom and Democratic Education’ at Leeds Arts University
Co-authored with Dr. Margaret Gregson, Professor of Vocational Education at the University of Sunderland, the book explores the development of practical wisdom, or phronesis, within the stories of four mature students studying for degrees in art & design.
The text builds on the work of Basil Bernstein to propose that phronesis, the ability to deliberate well, should be an intrinsic part of democratic education. The authors argue that democratic education should allow all learners to feel enhanced, included and able to participate in their education to create a constructive and reciprocal dialogue.
