We caught up with BA (Hons) Visual Communication student Farsya about studying in the UK, what inspires her work and her plans after graduation...

Why did you choose to study at Leeds Arts University?

Besides being well known, Leeds Arts University is recognized for its’ unique community and inspiring environment. My choice was also supported by the fact that it offered my rare course of study.

What are the advantages of studying at a specialist arts institution?

It gives students an opportunity to immerse themselves in various routes in art offered by the institution. This not only opens their minds to other possibilities they can partake in the future, it may inspire them in their own work as well.

There are important differences in the way art and design is taught in the UK compared to other countries. What have you noticed regarding the learning experience at Leeds Arts University?

People are generally more open to the idea of art as a career here. Back in my country, I have always felt like the community looked down on anyone in pursue of an art career. It was difficult to gain respect when involved in a practice that was considered ‘lazy and easy’, which appears to be remarkably different here. In Leeds Arts University, every individual is respected for their own views and ideas.

How have you adjusted to life in the UK and what advice would you give a new international student?

It takes time. You will adapt eventually. It is certain that life will never be the same as before, but that is the fun part.

What are the studios and facilities like at the University?

There is definitely a good amount of accessible studios and facilities. The only downside would be the fact that the University doesn’t offer much available material for use.

Do you feel that studying at Leeds Arts University is preparing you well for life after graduation?

It might be too early to tell in my case, but by the rate it’s going, I certainly feel like I am maturing as a student and individual throughout this experience.
